TO THE EDITOR:
I am a member of the Dunbar High School National Alumni Association of Texarkana, Texas. In all references, Dunbar was an all black school prior to integration. This institution served it’s purpose under many adverse circumstances from 1916 to 1966.
The school location was at Seventh and Elm Street. It is the concern of this association to give merits to this school for the outstanding achievements and contributions made by its alumnus.
The facts of maintaining recognition for this school site is to seek a historical marker. It is with our efforts and with the support of the Texarkana Museum that the required dated documents and records are being requested. It is further concerns of this writer that information of this nature would be so hard to find. This writer can relate to the history of Dunbar for many years, but personal knowledge is not acceptable. Dated documents must be from 1916 to 1956 whereas the time element will be valid. We are determined to have the application and project approved in the near future. We can save a lot of time if dated documents that anyone may have is given to use to photograph and return.
It is a concern of this writer that we would let Dunbar’s history become so vague and isolated with some documents kept private for whatever reasons. The logo of the Dunbar Buffalo is yet a visual site and to many of us it is still a memory of positive directions.
Information needed as to what you may have that we can use can be directed to the president of the Alumni Association, Mr. Dan Haskins, 903-832-1354, or Morris A Neighbors, 903-796-9638, 793-1547.
